WACOMP - Cabo Verde: Closure of the project "Response to the Covid-19 crisis and revival of the tourism sector in Cabo Verde

Eighteen months after its implementation, the project "Response to the Covid-19 crisis and revival of the tourism sector in Cape Verde", WACOMP Cabo Verde, was closed this October 2021.
Funded by the European Union to the tune of nearly 5 million euros, and jointly implemented by UNDP and UNIDO, in partnership with the government of Cape Verde, the project was part of the West Africa Competitiveness Support Programme (WACOMP). It aimed to mitigate the socio-economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the most economically vulnerable groups and to support the recovery of the tourism sector by building the capacity of key tourism stakeholders and increasing the competitiveness of medium, small and micro enterprises through quality certification and supply chain integration.

More than 24,000 beneficiaries were identified, among the informal sector, with a focus on women heads of households, and REMPE workers benefiting from a solidarity income, which enabled them to cope with the immediate impacts of the crisis.
More than 2,500 professionals and direct and indirect actors in the tourism sector (tour guides, taxi and hotel drivers, travel agents, border and airport police and municipal guards, hotel managers) were trained with the necessary tools to face the new era of tourism after covid19.
22 national consultants/auditors trained in good manufacturing practices and hazard analysis and critical control points - risk control to ensure quality certification and supply chain integration.
The project was a joint programme between the EU in Cape Verde, the #UNDP, the Ministry of Tourism and Transport, the Ministry of Family, Inclusion and Social Development, UNIDO - United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the #IGPQI
The closing ceremony was chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance, and was attended by the Minister of Tourism and Transport, the EU representative and the UNDP representative.
